River Dee

updated 22/03/05

The River Dee, including tributaries accessible to salmon is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for freshwater pearl mussel, Atlantic salmon and otter.

As an SAC, the Dee forms part of the Natura 2000 series: a network of sites throughout the European Union designed to conserve habitats and species of plant and animal that are rare, endangered or vulnerable.

Designation as an SAC obliges all public agencies to undertake their responsibilities in a way that avoids any deterioration of the habitats of the species for which the site is designated.
